“A remarkable book... A solid, research-based book that’s applicable to real life. The algorithms the authors discuss are, in fact, more applicable to real-life problems than I’d have ever predicted.... It’s well worth the time to find a copy of Algorithms to Live By and dig deeper.”―Forbes“By the end of the book, I was convinced. Not because I endorse the idea of living like some hyper-rational Vulcan, but because computing algorithms could be a surprisingly useful way to embrace the messy compromises of real, non-Vulcan life.”―The Guardian (UK)“I absolutely reveled in this book... It's the perfect antidote to the argument you often hear from young math students: ‘What's the point? I'll never use this in real life!’... The whole business, whether it's the relative simplicity of the 37% rule or the mind-twisting possibilities of game theory, is both potentially practical and highly enjoyable as presented here. Recommended.”―Popular Science (UK)“An entertaining, intelligently presented book... Craftily programmed to build from one good idea to the next... The value of being aware of algorithmic thinking―of the thornier details of ‘human algorithm design,’ as Christian and Griffiths put it―is not just better problem solving, but also greater insight into the human mind. And who doesn’t want to know how we tick?”―Kirkus Reviews“Compelling and entertaining, Algorithms to Live By is packed with practical advice about how to use time, space, and effort more efficiently. And it’s a fascinating exploration of the workings of computer science and the human mind. Whether you want to optimize your to-do list, organize your closet, or understand human memory, this is a great read.”―Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit“In this remarkably lucid, fascinating, and compulsively readable book, Christian and Griffiths show how much we can learn from computers. We’ve all heard about the power of algorithms―but Algorithms to Live Byactually explains, brilliantly, how they work, and how we can take advantage of them to make better decisions in our own lives.”―Alison Gopnik, coauthor of The Scientist in the Crib“I’ve been waiting for a book to come along that merges computational models with human psychology―and Christian and Griffiths have succeeded beyond all expectations. This is a wonderful book, written so that anyone can understand the computer science that runs our world―and more importantly, what it means to our lives.”―David Eagleman, author of Incognito: The Secret Lives of the BrainBrian Christian is the author of The Most Human Human, a Wall Street Journal bestseller, New York Times editors’ choice, and a New Yorker favorite book of the year. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and The Paris Review, as well as in scientific journals such as Cognitive Science, and has been translated into eleven languages. He lives in San Francisco.Tom Griffiths is a professor of psychology and cognitive science at UC Berkeley, where he directs the Computational Cognitive Science Lab. He has published more than 150 scientific papers on topics ranging from cognitive psychology to cultural evolution, and has received awards from the National Science Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, the American Psychological Association, and the Psychonomic Society, among others. He lives in Berkeley.

What should we do, or leave undone, in a day or a lifetime? How much messiness should we accept? What balance of the new and familiar is the most fulfilling? These may seem like uniquely human quandaries, but they are not. Computers, like us, confront limited space and time, so computer scientists have been grappling with similar problems for decades. And the solutions they’ve found have much to teach us.

In a dazzlingly interdisciplinary work, Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths show how algorithms developed for computers also untangle very human questions. They explain how to have better hunches and when to leave things to chance, how to deal with overwhelming choices and how best to connect with others. From finding a spouse to finding a parking spot, from organizing one’s inbox to peering into the future, Algorithms to Live By transforms the wisdom of computer science into strategies for human living.

Life changing This book is a very good introduction to several mathematical concepts that many people have heard of, but don't know much about. Brian Christian also does something very clever: he makes these concepts eminently relatable. It may sound like hyperbole, but the chapters on optimal stopping and explore/exploit changed my life. I save a lot more time not trying to figure out which parking spot to choose or where to eat.The most impactful concepts are clustered in the front of the book, which is again optimal for those readers with short attention spans. The stuff later in the book is also very enlightening, just not as universally applicable as optimal stopping or explore/exploit.This is not a book designed for people with an advanced understanding of math or computer science. It's designed as a gateway to bring in people like me who are interested in these fields, but are perhaps a little intimidated.Read it now, people. We All Need This Book Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions by Brian Christian and Tom GriffithsThere are predictably a number of readers who will look at this title and shy away, thinking that a book with "algorithms" in its title must be just for techies and computer scientists. There will be others who pride themselves on being technologically astute who think they know all about algorithms already. Both groups are wrong. Both will be astounded and profoundly affected by the human applications Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths make in this book for all of us. I should qualify that; it is a book for anyone who has ever had difficulty in such tasks as "when to stop looking" (for an apartment, for instance); how to schedule a busy family's priorities; how to clean out the garage; how to stop thinking about a problem; how to network. In fact, all the day-to-day problems that follow us from waking up to going to bed are addressed here by the human use of algorithms. I confess that I was grateful for the definition of "algorithms" early in the book; it is one of those words that everyone uses but many of us would have been hard put to explain. Notice I wrote "would have been" because this book explains it all so clearly that neophytes can understand it and technological people will not feel they are being patronized. And all of us who really use this book (not just read, but use) will find it has made our lives more productive, better organized, and essentially, much happier. Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths are geniuses at combining cutting edge philosophy with information we can use to make our lives richer.

Title: Of Blood and Bone Pdf Chronicles of The One, Book 2

Nora Roberts, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the epic Year One returns with Of Blood and Bone, a new tale of terror and magick in a brand new world.

They look like an everyday family living an ordinary life. But beyond the edges of this peaceful farm, unimaginable forces of light and dark have been unleashed.

Fallon Swift, approaching her thirteenth birthday, barely knows the world that existed before—the city where her parents lived, now in ruins and reclaimed by nature since the Doom sickened and killed billions. Traveling anywhere is a danger, as vicious gangs of Raiders and fanatics called Purity Warriors search for their next victim. Those like Fallon, in possession of gifts, are hunted—and the time is coming when her true nature, her identity as The One, can no longer be hidden.

In a mysterious shelter in the forest, her training is about to begin under the guidance of Mallick, whose skills have been honed over centuries. She will learn the old ways of healing; study and spar; encounter faeries and elves and shifters; and find powers within herself she never imagined. And when the time is right, she will take up the sword, and fight. For until she grows into the woman she was born to be, the world outside will never be whole again.

You can skip this one This is only the 2nd time I have given less than a stellar review to one of NR books but this was a needless waste of my time. I specifically saved this to read on our long road trip at Christmas, but man was I disappointed. This book repeated the same thing over and over again until I was ready to pull my hair out. There was very little forward movement and the repetitive dialogue regarding the family importance was just more than I could stand. After the first 10 times believe me we get it, the family is important, the birth father was important, it just went on and on and on. I really loved the first one and I think she could have done so much more with this one, I’m just not sure why she didn’t. If you loved the first one then you can safely skip this bc she doesn’t offer anything of real value to the story here.A Great Read I won’t disagree with the one (1 star) review as we all are entitled to our opinions, most particularly about art in all of its many forms. I would, however, like to counter the suggestion/directive that Ms. Roberts exclusively write fiction that “makes sense”. I don’t understand this since a considerable part of her collection deals with the fantastical, such as witches and faeries. I will say that “Year One” (the first book in this series) was darker than Ms. Roberts’ usual work, but I quickly immersed myself in the story she was telling and realized that it, as with all her work, was well-written, descriptive and compelling. If you are on the fence, simply read the offered summary before committing as it properly gives a person a fine sense that “Of Blood and Bone” does not neatly fit in with Ms. Roberts’ usual “lighter” offerings, but to my way of thinking, it is nevertheless a great read.Great Series continues! I am not usually one to pick up a multi-book series until it is complete, which allows me to binge-read it all the way through. Nora Roberts’ second book in the Chronicles of The One series fooled me with the word “sequel” at the top of the cover. There is another book coming, and I guess we will all have to wait for it.Ms. Roberts did bring Book 2’s storyline to a close, avoiding a cliffhanger-like ending. The action and the constant danger in Book 1 takes a back seat to character development and setting up the story for an all-out war between the factions of black and white, good and evil. If you are one of the few who haven’t read Book 1 yet, my advice would be to start there. Although there are plenty of references back to the beginning of the story, you will not understand exactly who all the supporting and minor characters are, which will subtract from your enjoyment of what is an entertaining series.Fallon Swift is the focus of this book. She is The One, the warrior of the prophecies that promise of her coming to lead the army of light against the forces of darkness. “Of Blood and Bone” leads us on a journey through her years of training, and allows readers a deep look into the person who will undoubtedly be at the forefront of Book 3.This is not just another apocalyptic tale, although one might suspect this might be the case, what with the combination of emergent magic, declining civilization, and the resurrection of weapons of former wars. The author melds good storytelling and dialogue with descriptive passages that reveal much about the main characters. While I am personally not happy with the fact that I have to wait until Ms. Roberts’ fertile imagination can produce Book 3, this is a series worth reading. It combines realism with the fantastic, giving us a strong glimpse into a world that might never come to pass. Five stars.

In the third part, Contemporary Moral Problems, the readings present the current debates over abortion, euthanasia, famine relief, environmentalism, and the use of torture in interrogations, as well as essays on the trolley problem, death, and the meaning of life. One-third of the selections are authored by women. Wherever possible, each reading is printed in its entirety.

The sixth edition adds study questions after each reading in order to help students delve more deeply into each work and also features eight new selections and expanded introductions. A password-protected Instructor's Manual is available on the book's Ancillary Resource Center.
